History
Mullingar Tennis Club was founded in the late 1930s when a group of people came together to purchase a field for the princely sum of £80 on which the club today is located.
Two of the founder members were William Curran of Mount St. and Bernard Carty, an inspector in the Garda Force at that time. The club attracted many players and enjoyed a boom period up to the 1950s and early 1960s when numbers playing tennis decreased and the club fell into decline.
In the mid 1960s, on the initiative of the then Bishop of Meath, a group of people running St. Mary’s Boys Club, including Michael Creighton, Fr Willie Cleary, Brian Corroun, Gerry Murtagh, Dermot? Holmes, Larry Coyne, Dan O’Dowd became involved in the revival of the Tennis Club. Over the years of their involvement the club grew from strength to strength, during which 8 hard courts, the previous clubhouse and badminton hall were constructed.
The junior tennis proved very popular amongst the younger generation at this time due to the commitment and dedication of Michael Creighton, when some of the club’s youngsters were winners in the Junior Championship in Fitzwilliam. Outstanding young players included, John Conlon, Mary Waldron, Jean Smith and the now Tennis Irelands Technical Director, Gary Cahill.
In 2003, the old clubhouse was demolished and Senator Mary O’Rourke officially opened a modern and bigger clubhouse in July 2004. Currently the club has two contrasting court surfaces, four hard rubber courts and also four savannah courts, all fully floodlit. Members total some 200 adults and 200 juniors with coaching available for all levels.
